The Effects Of Glutathione, Your Immune System And Future Capabilities

July 12th, 2010

A naturally occurring antioxidant, Glutathione resides within every cell in your body, preventing a process called oxidation. This process negatively affects cells, damaging them and ruining their ability to function. Another notable effect is that the cells age quicker and as the overall cells age, so does the body they are in. Oxidation can also be contributed to a list of other health problems that can plague the human body. Glutathione, if manipulated, might one day be able to offer significant advances in health as it affects some fundamental factors in the body. Below is some information regarding glutathione and your immune system in regards to basic functions and potential future use.

Glutathione (GSH)

Acting as an antioxidant, GSH also helps white cells reproduce, doubling its effectiveness. Furthermore, it has the ability to affect free radicals, which many blame for the natural deterioration of cells over time, damaging them. Potentially, if the free radicals could be contained, it would prevent aging in cells.

Other Effects

It can provide many different functions relating to the body, such as aiding the liver in removal of toxins from the likes of drugs, alcohol and other chemicals that pose a threat to the body. Furthermore, scientists believe it can defeat age-related diseases as well literally any other disease, as it can help in the production of white cells and attach itself to toxins, allowing them to be safely dealt with. In terminally ill patients, it’s been noted that many serious diseases cause the depletion of this substance, which is integral for protecting our cells from disintegration at the hands of oxidation and eventually shutting down our liver.

Further adding to high hopes for this substance, one of the amino acids that forms it has also been proven to reduce the risk of breast cancer, with possible risk reducing abilities in prostate and lung cancer as well. Discoveries of this nature are few and far between, though it is still only a theory, scientists have high hopes for GSH, and the amino acids making it up, to perform well in the prevention of other cancers.

Our bodies can create this substance from such sulfur-rich foods like eggs, asparagus, broccoli and other things. However, when taking a dosage of it, there has been no conclusive evidence of improvement, leaving it as a gray area as to whether it helps or not, though no doubt future studies and research will reveal an alternative way of increasing their count.

Conclusion

The possibilities for glutathione are endless and it is only now that we are discovering the potential for GSH. It could cure terminal illnesses or prevent aging and extend lifespans, all by reducing free radicals, preventing oxidation and clearing toxins as well as other, currently undiscovered, acts in the body. Unfortunately, as with many discoveries, it may be years before its secrets are unlocked and even more years before it’s put to use in hospitals or commercial use. Perhaps one day, herbal supplements will be available that top up your glutathione to protect you against the many different illnesses.
